I chose a fascinating paua shell from New Zealand to create this simple pendant with chain. The shell is one of five that were given to me by a violin student after her family visited there last year. My student knows I love to bead and thought I could use them in my jewelry. She also knows of my interest in visiting Australia and New Zealand and hoped to inspire me to visit sooner. Of course, I was excited to receive them !
The paua shell, known in the US as abalone, is found in shallow coastal waters along rocky shorelines. The Maori culture regards them as both culinary and artistic treasures, therefore there are strict restrictions on harvesting them. Only free-diving is allowed and the catch is restricted to 10 shells per person per day. The striking iridescent colors make the shells popular souvenirs with tourists.
The pendant is stitched in peyote stitch with Miyuki Delica beads and is held on a goldtone chain. The chain is 23" but could be shortened. The photo shows the chain at 18". Pendant is 2" in length.
